National Pi Beta Phi History

On April 28, 1867, 12 women joined together to form a secret college society for women, not knowing what the future would hold. That society was founded as I.C. Sorosis at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. More than 140 years later, those 12 women have touched the lives of over 236,000 members across North America. Pi Beta Phi was the first national secret college society of women to be modeled after the Greek-letter fraternities of men. At at time when few women were admitted to colleges and universities, Pi Beta Phi created a feeling of unity among pioneering women.

The Pa Theta Chapter was started on October 1, 1989. A group of 90 women were formally pledged into membership of the fraternity at Villanova University. After a week of organizing rush activities, that were overseen by Pi Beta Phi National Officers and Pi Phi's from Bucknell University, these 90 pledges were intiated to begin the Pennsylvania Theta Chapter of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity which continues to flourish.
